A little taste of Saint Mont history …

The village of Saint-Mont is built on a rocky outcrop, holding court over the Gascon river Adour. This privileged situation is what gives the village its strong place in history. Inhabited at the dawn of humanity, the mount was devoted to the Druids, and then to the Romans, who created an oppidum (roman fort) and it is to them the saint-montais owe their civilization.

Introducing various cultures to the area, all with the vine at their core, the Romans built Temples in which they made sacrifices to the Pagan Gods. In 1050, on the ruins of old the oppidum, a local lord, Bernard Tumapaler, constructed the Monastery of Saint Mont, dedicated to Saint John and united with the order of Cluny. The monks occupied the Monastery until the French revolution and in 1791; it was sold alongside many other national treasures.

Today, Saint-Mont, in the GERS, with 324 inhabitants, is a historical village where life is good. In 1972, a small group founded an association "Loi 1901" called Foyer Rural and since, the association has grown. Foyer Rural's objective is to enhance the life of the saint-montais. Proud of their Gascon tradition, the saint-montais are quick to interrupt any activity to enjoy a meal, bringing them together with their friends, either in the village hall, or on the village square. These are generous Gascon meals where Saint-Mont wine, produced by the Plaimont producers, flows freely.
